Kids’ Dental Activities

Take a field trip to the dentist’s office.

Ask the dentist to introduce his staff and their roles at the office, take the kids on a tour of the office, and discuss the tools he uses.  Not only will kids have a great time (after all, kids love field trips — even to the dentist), but they’ll be more comfortable at their next appointment.

Try the Egg Shell Experiment.

To demonstrate the effects of not brushing and flossing regularly, use an egg to symbolize a tooth and vinegar to symbolize the acids formed in your mouth after eating. Point out that the shell of the egg protects it, just like the enamel on teeth protects them. Place the egg in a jar full of vinegar for two minutes. Allow the kids to observe the difference in the egg shell. Have them draw conclusions and relate the effects on the egg to their teeth.

Create a brushing chart to keep track of oral care habits.

Use the brushing chart to record when and for how long kids brush and floss their teeth.  Create a line for each member of the family and encourage each other to make healthy choices.

Brainstorm healthy snacks to keep at home.

Explain to kids the harmful effects sugar and acid can have on their teeth, and then brainstorm a list of healthy foods that eliminate or reduce sugar intake.  Once you have a list of 25 healthy foods, choose a few of the items to make for snack time and to include in their lunch box.
