Brushing your teeth is the best way to prevent tooth decay or cavities. However, sometimes it can be quite the struggle to get your kids to do it. Dental cavities, or tooth decay, are one of the single most common chronic childhood diseases and what you may not know is that it’s contagious. The bacteria that cause decay can be passed from one person to another by kissing or sharing drinks or silverware. Tooth decay is one of the most common chronic childhood diseases and one of the top reasons children visit school nurses. More than 51 million school hours are lost each year due to dental-related illness.
The Children’s Oral Health Coalition (COHC), led by Cook Children’s Community Health Outreach department, works to improve the oral health of children in Tarrant County, especially underserved children. Organized in 1999, the COHC is a diverse, county-wide collaboration of 35 local organizations. The COHC promotes awareness of children’s oral health issues and supports prevention of oral health disease. Kohl’s has joined COHC as a funding sponsor. Read more... (485 words, 8 images)

Ramstein Air Base in Germany hosts their annual Little Teeth, Big Smiles Clinic. Twice a year the men and women from the 86th Dental Squadron providing free dental services and educating children in proper oral care.
Dentists and dental technicians provide services such as dental examinations, x-rays and cleanings for children and well-baby exams for infants and toddlers.

Have the children cut out two strips of paper that when connected will fit around their head. Connect the strips with glue or tape, (staples will catch the child’s hair). Supply each child with a circle shaped piece of tag board and a piece of tin foil. Have the child wrap the tin foil around the tag board. Staple the tag board to the headband. Each February, the American Dental Association (ADA) sponsors National Children’s Dental Health Month (NCDHM) to raise awareness about the importance of oral health. The American Dental Association held the first national observance of Children’s Dental Health Day on February 8, 1949. This single day observance became a week-long event in 1955.
